Yesterday I learned that my CPA of probably 20 years suddenly passed away. It was quite a shock to me. He seemed to have an infection and a weak heart. His heart couldn't manage and he was sick and later died within about three weeks. He was 75 years old and a one man shop, quirky but a good guy. Now in the middle of tax season, we need to find a new one. Ours is not that difficult but I want to have a relationship with someone who can carry us into retirement. I expect that we'll have to scramble to find someone who has availability but I'm really sad about my old guy. We have some calls out to people we know looking for recommendations.
Such a bummer

I applaud your looking for a long-standing relationship. You can find the IRS directory of registered tax return preparers (people who hold a "PTIN" Preparer Tax ID) at https://irs.treasury.gov/rpo/rpo.jsf and do a search by zip code and credential. You can look for another CPA or an Enrolled Agent (EA).
Also you should be aware that you can put your tax return on extension by filing a Form 4868. This is an extension of the time to FILE the return, not to pay--you can make your best estimate of your tax and make sure that your withholdings and estimated tax payments approach that and send in a payment with your extension. Don't forget to file an extension and pay your expected tax with your state as well.
The extension gives you until October 15th to file your tax return.
Surprisingly, the IRS penalty for failure to *file* a return is 10 times higher than their penalty for failure to *pay* your tax return, but if you file the extension requests then the tax return will not be counted as late. This will give you more time to find someone with whom you can have the long-term relationship you are looking for. Good luck!
