Dang it

August 5th, 2025 at 09:34 pm

I made an error in my plans. I have to give a year notice so I guess it's "one more year" .   It could be worse and I will be okay.  Just returned from 24 day road trip, it was wonderful but I've got to get ready for work.

One year's notice sounds very excessive!

What in the world requires a one year notice? Are you like a brain surgeon or something? That's the only time I've ever heard of someone requiring that (because apparently that was a very difficult position to find someone that can be trained up as a replacement).

Yowza, why a one year's notice? Hopefully this same place would give a one year's notice if they were going to lay off people.

Yikes. That's an important detail to miss but the silver lining is that you have lots of time to plan.

In response to others, I'm assuming that you have access to a voluntary separation plan (VSP) at work. That's what I had. My notice had to be given 6 months in advance. In exchange, I received a parting gift from the company when I left - 6 months' worth of pay. The long notice allowed them to fill my position without disruption in work. At my former employer, an employee had to be 55+ and have years of service to the company to qualify.

Lifebalance is correct! This is an early phased retirement so I will work part time with full benefits but I must follow the rules about how I do this process. I also could be impacted by my employers number of other employees who also might be wanting to phase retirement too. I will be putting in my notice in less than 30 days so cross your fingers for me!
